The artist

Sarah Michael

Born in Newark, England 1964.

After beginning a textile design study at Liverpool polytechnics, travelling through Asia and working as a costume designer in Australia, Sarah decided that her heart wasn’t in textiles.

In 1987 she ended up in the Netherlands where she started a ceramics course by the well known Dutch potter  Wim Borst. There she discovered that working with clay and especially throwing pots was her big passion.

Simultanously she worked as a production potter, which seemed the best way for her to improve throwing skills. In 1995 she set up her own busines and gave her imagination free reign.

Now as a ceramic artist, most work she produces still starts being thrown. The challenge however is for her to give these initially thrown objects the most unusual shapes, using different techniques and creative manipulation.

Sarah gets her inspiration from all things in her daily life and the nature. In her women sculptures she indulges in her sense of humor and fascination with the grotesque. Her buxom Diva's are equipped with spiky nipples and sexy eyelashes. All her women are over the top, often wearing crazy stiletto shoes, fish-net stockings and trendy sunglasses. Sometimes you'll find them theatrically lounging on a chaise-longue or lilo, bobbing along above waves or in a life-buoy. It's not really necessary to look for deep and hidden meanings in Sarah's work. Sarah's happy-go-lucky caricatures of women are basically to be looked at with a pinch of salt and a smile:)

Since she started her own atelier in 1995 she has exhibited her work in various galleries. Several outlets sell her work permanently and she participates  in many ceramic fairs. A summary of these you can find on the news and outlet pages.
