biography
Born in Newark, England, in 1964, Sarah is a Dutch-British ceramist whose creative journey began with a foundation course in Art and Design at Nottingham Polytechnic, followed by a Bachelor of Arts with Honours Degree in Textile Design from Liverpool Polytechnic. She further honed her craft at the Atelier Wim Borst in Haarlem, Holland, and began her professional career in ceramics with an apprenticeship at Pottery De Bolle Deur in 1990. Sarah worked as a production thrower at Pottery Van Wondergem in Leiden before becoming a self-employed artist in De Zilk, The Netherlands, in 1995.
Sarah’s work is characterized by her use of the wheel, with both her sculptural and functional pieces originating from thrown clay. By assembling and altering the thrown pieces, she creates dynamic 3D forms inspired by nature, people, animals, current events, and her personal experiences. Her vibrant ceramic works often feature body stains, transparent glazes, lusters, and transfers, with stoneware used for larger sculptures and porcelain for more delicate forms.
